MANAGING STRESS

Time Management

Most people approach time management with one major question: "How can I get more done in less time?"

Ineffective time management

  • Constant rushing
  • Frequent lateness
  • Low productivity, energy and motivation
  • Frustration
  • Impatience
  • Chronic vacillation between alternatives
  • Difficulty setting and achieving goals
  • Procrastination

And while we all have 24 hours in the day, some of us seem to be able to achieve a great deal in the time while others struggle to complete anything at all.

Those people who manage to use their time effectively do so because they structure their lives and focus most of their time and energy on what is important to them, be it at work or at home. Those who feel there are not enough hours in the day can find themselves doing many different tasks at the same time, but not actually completing anything.

It is simply a matter of prioritising, deciding what is important, and what can be left.

An Italian economist, called Vilfredo Pareto, expounded the 80/20 principle. He noted that 20% of what we do yields 80% of the results and this can be applied to many areas in our daily lives. For example, about 20% of the newspaper is worth your while to read, so you are better off simply skimming through the rest. A good 80% of people's mail is junk and best not read at all. Just about 80% of housework can be left indefinitely, while 20% of it, if not done would soon make your home uninhabitable.
